I primarily work with painting, sculpture and stop motion. My work is colorful, figurative and direct, often using humor to draw people in while addressing more serious stories and issues beneath the surface.I want people to be able to look at and interpret my work without needing prior knowledge or complicated explanations, and I use humor and color to make people want to stay with it. Many people in my social circle rarely visit museums or art exhibitions because they find art difficult to understand, or experience the art world as a place that is not for them. This limits who gets access, and therefore I want my work to be meaningful to people both inside and outside the art world. I see it as one of my responsibilities as an artist to help make art accessible to more people.
I take my own life and the people around me as starting points for exploring questions of power, identity, class, gender roles and resistance. I am not afraid to use personal experiences that can be uncomfortable or difficult to talk about, and I use them to say something larger about the time we live in. In this way, my work becomes a commentary on our present and a way of encouraging people to think about and discuss what it actually says about us. Sometimes I depict personal experiences directly, based on what has happened, while at other times I use them as a starting point to create new narratives in which I shift the perspective of power.
